My friend Tee, a New Zealander who is now working for DHL in Singapore was talking to me the other day on the MSN. She had studied in Montreal for 6 months last year.

This is an update she sent with link to photos:-

UPDATE

> Left you hanging at the start of semester, and now
> there are only 4 weeks of classes left - where has
> the time flown by! (and how has so little work been
> done! oh dear)
>
> A few important announcements:
>
> 1) The last leg of Jen & Tee's World Culinary Tour
> has sniff sniff, finally concluded. Last Saturday I
> returned back teary-eyed from an extended
> mid-semester break with my culinary counterpart
> after much fun and wintery escapades in Toronto,
> Ottawa, St Hippolyte and Montreal.
>
> My impressions of:
> Toronto – Huge sprawling mess of big buildings
> and grey mass. Still a great place in terms of all
> the big city fun and multicultural vibes. People
> ranged from super nice (probably originate from
> outside of Toronto!) to super mean (on the subway
> with all my luggage, a lady swore so viciously at my
> backpack, it nearly cried. I very nearly got angry
> grrah!). Flippin COLD.
> Ottawa – Nice feel with the beautiful old
> Parliament buildings. Oozes bureaucracy. Supreme
> Court judges wear santa outfits (seriously).
> Flippin COLD.
> Montreal – Oh what a city! Has an oh so hip
> funky European-esque attitude (fusion of modern and
> traditional character). You feel like you're in
> France but not quite. Also flippin COLD but at
> least they had bonfires in the middle of the city
> for the winterfest!
>
> Highlights of "the cold cold west":
> - My friend Wes's roommate calling my NZ accent
> "sophisticated" - go figure!
> - Going (unintentionally) to a zodiac themed
> single's party on Valentines day where I
> rediscovered how yummy candy necklaces are and
> discovered how pricey it is to buy wine in Toronto
> (damn the tipping here!)
> - Making pavlova at Wes's place, which included
> having to crush sugar cubes with a pepper shaker,
> using a teeny weeny whisk, breaking a hole in the
> bottom of the plastic bowl and using Italian
> kiwifruit (the horror!).
> - Getting sore legs from walking around, not from
> the physical exercise, but because it was so cold
> out! Flesh freezing mmmm yum. Apparently I got a
> mild stretch of weather i.e. above the usual
> –30 degrees
> - Staying in a jail cell. Our hostel in Ottawa was
> a jail cell with one dim light, no doors just bars
> and plastic covered mattresses and pillows. Lucky
> it was only a 2 night stay. Oh and there were
> ghosts (apparently).
> - Far too corny winterywonderland activities such as
> cross-country skiing, ice skating, making snow
> angels, toasting marshmellows on bonfires in the
> middle of downtown Montreal, sitting in front of a
> fireplace everynight drinking red wine. [NB All of
> the aforementioned were completed relatively
> scathe-free, only resulting in a little sprained
> thumb]
> - Having a long conversation entirely in French with
> a very gay and shoe-loving sales assistant in
> Montreal. Admittedly it was a one-sided
> conversation...BUT I understood he was very sad I
> bought the last pair of his favourite shoes in the
> store - my good pronounciation of "oui, ah oui"
> musta been good!
> - Not to forget the all important food aspect:
> eating the best French Toast in the WORLD (mango and
> cream cheese and plentiful amounts of maple syrup),
> eating Beaver Tails while ice skating (deep fried
> goodness), an exquisite 3-course French meal at the
> lakeside resort (think foie gras and goose penne),
> entering cheese heaven in Toronto where Jen & I died
> eating samples of what we miss most from home - NZ
> edam and cheddar!
>

>
> Luckily Jen & Tee have resolved to resume their
> culinary tour at a later date – perhaps
> conquering the African continent! Stay tuned!
>
> Now go take a break, further announcements will be
> in my next email
>
> xot

> PS I tried sending this out last week and it appears
> it didn't work...so apologies if by chance you get
