Queue Culture
One of the biggest things that I have noticed being in Canada is the polite queue culture.
In Australia, and in Denmark when waiting at bus stops etc it is random style. You locate the bus stop and then you can stand anywhere, it does not really matter because when the bus arrives it is every person for themselves.
I remember when I was at school and the bus would arrive it was a mob mentality... people would literally all bunch around the door and it was anyones guess as to who would enter the bus when and in what order. Usually the more aggressive and assertive people pushed their way to the front. In peak hours, it could be chaos - and definately to get the on the bus you wanted, it was a survival approach that was necessary.
In Montreal, it was and still is so strange to me, the amazing queue culture that exists. People go to the bus stop, and stand in a self made queue. If you arrive first, you are first in line. People will literally line up one by one all the way down the street, and sometimes around the corner of a street.
It is SO POLITE. SO ordered, and simply natural to everyone.
I was thinking the other day, when I go back to Oz or other countries where this does not exist, I am going to get so frustrated, and most likely find people rude.
It is going to be interesting to reintegrate to the chaos based approach :-)

finally it's me... this day was really nice, and inspired by a great seminar I finally decided to post a comment on your blog my babe... especially when the queue culture hit me almost as much as you...
so in lovely country is definately MOB mentality, but you know who is the most pushy and aggresive...... ? old mamas and papas who literally run (faster than sportsmen )or tend to hit you with their walking sticks. hehe.

Sorry, but I have to disagree Maz, and I'm in Montreal as well. I'll be standing in queues, and people will just walk in in front of me. And it's happened more than once... At Sydney Airport waiting to get on the plane to Vancouver, at Vancouver immigration, waiting for lunch at the food court, waiting to buy tickets on the Metro, waiting to buy shoes at Aldo, waiting to buy a SIM card at Fido, waiting for a bagel at Tim Hortons...
The more I'm thinking about it, the more there seem to be! *Mumbles* It must be just me... :-o
Wow... it is YOU my friend :-)
Seriously, this is hilarious. I have always found it to be terribly polite, so has my fellow trainee Maja. Actually so has a good friend studying here from Germany.
How very interesting.... anyone else out there prepared to take an opinion, living or having been in Montreal-Canada...?
Maybe I should stop wearing that Mr Potatohead disguise thing.
Wear it tomorrow when we meet up... it will be HILARIOUS!
Maybe we can take photos of you in disguise around the city. It will be totally Where's Wally style... or as in US, Where's Waldo!:-)
Could it strange and fun.
