Thoughts?
Last week I posted about ABN AMRO, about the interview and the feeling within it. I believed that at the end of the interview that we had come to the conclusion that I was not for ABN and ABN was not for me.
Apparently not.
I recieved a call today from the lovely Kilian and Claire, asking me if I wanted the job, that they would love to have me on board. That they had reflected on it and had the following to say:
1. Routine Work. A big discussion point in the first interview was that I was not good at routine tasks, that I was quick to lose interest. This contradicted with the fact that a large strategy they were pushing involved database management. But they have taken that part out of my role, so I would be involved in Talent Management and Global Diversity only.
2. Office Culture. They were explaining that they have an open office. So everyone is sitting around, talking, working together all the time, and it is like any other HR department. That although the finance industry is more slow moving, the office I am in is very fast paced and different from what my perceptions might be.
3. Team Fit. They really felt that I would fit really well into the team - they had thought about my personality and were quite excited to have me on board.
So now I am more confused - it is not so clear cut. Plus it is a short time role and responsibility (6 months) so it is enough to get the experience I am looking for...
What are thoughts out there? I would appreciate as many opinions and advice as possible.
Thanks

Just Do It.
Why is it that we're all so good at giving advice to each other, just not ourselves? :-P
Fate rarely throws itself in your face like this Maz. Thats all I have to say.
opportunity!
it's up to you ....
Well I'm a little less enthusiastic in my comments than the above 3 Maz, but will say this. Look at the opportunity cost in terms of time of taking this role. If you don't have anything else lined up for the next 6 months, then take this job. Even if it turns out not to be an enjoyable experience, it will still be a worthwhile experience (for finding more out about yourself if nothing else.) And if you do have something else that you want to start in the next 6 months, but that thing can wait and will still be there after ABN Amro, then take the job. What's the worst that can happen? Your longer term plans are delayed 6 months but you can valuable learning on the way. And what's the best that can happen? You may fall in love with the role, the city, and who knows what else!
The way you can look at it is-- what's 6 months of your life? So once you decide that "yeah 6 months is not too long", the next question you can are probably asking yourself "how do I know that this is NOT what I want?" I know that your traineeship has had its ups and downs...and this will too. What an experience like this will do is give you another 6 months to figure out what you actually REALLY want to do and what you absolutely do NOT want to do. Along the way you will also be able to network with people so it can't be that bad.
Seize this opportunity. Good luck!

what about the AI finance position?
I agree with all opinions stated above except for the AI one. Sounds like a great opportunity and doing something unrelated to AIESEC for a little while might be good for your soul, etc.
On an unrelated note, take the job. That's my advice.
Some people say that luck is when opportunity meets preparation, you have an opportunity in front of you, are you ready to turn it into luck?.
I mean what is the worst that can happen, you invest 6 months of your life, make sure that is not the environment or type of work you want to commit yourself to, and look for another opportunity to move on with some extra experience. You might miss some other opportunities though.
Now what is the best that can happen? is it worth the try?

Hey Mazz
Do it.....
It will give you the time to consider the starting of your company and might give you the network for making it real as well.
Mark
