The liberation of MAYBE

Over the last week, I have found myself in several situations where I am having to do things because I have made committments to others, - even if that is not infact what or how I want to spend my time at the given moment.

Last Sunday night I really felt as if by not doing things, that certain people would be let down.In fact, that is what I was as good as told on several occasions...

Maz, we need you there, it will not be the same otherwise
Maz, you said you were coming, we are counting on you to be there
Maz, Maz, Maz.

I have had enough of this - how come this is happening?

I had a frank discussion with Arthur, and he told me a word I need to use more: ''maybe"

Maz will you come to the party? MAYBE
Maz will you be at the drinks? MAYBE
Maz will you come to the movies? MAYBE

MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE.

It's been liberating.

now you just have to make sure people don't miscontrue your 'maybe' as a 'yes', and thus a commitment. take it from an experienced commitment-phobe, people tend to do that.

Yeah, maybes could have a frightful positive connotation to it.

You could also say "it depends."

If you don't feel like going, then people can blame it on whatever you h ad depended on :)
